PeepRep: Don't you mean 'about' her book?
Liza: No. I intend to interview the book too.
PeepRep: *rolls eyes* I can't wait to see this.
Liza: Live and learn, PeepRep. Live and learn.
Rebecca, put down the hoe, leave the farming to the other preppers and come say hello to my peeps.
Rebecca: Hello Liza and Peep Rep.
Liza: Rebecca! You know you aren't supposed to talk to Peep Rep. And why didn't you greet us with a 'Howdy'? You live in Texas now, not New Jersey.
Rebecca: I do live in Texas, but my friends don't say 'Howdy'.
Liza: Weird. But they wear dirty, torn overalls, right?
Rebecca: Nope.
Liza: Are you sure you live in Texas?
Rebecca: Pretty sure.
Rebecca: More than I imagined.
Rebecca: I try not to think about those.
Liza: And what about fire ants?
Rebecca: We have met those, but I don't remember them looking quite so scary.
Liza: The pic above is a nest guard. They take steroids. You've probably just run into the food collectors.
Rebecca: Are you making this up?
Liza: Nope. That's why you need to teach your boys to avoid the nests. Especially the big ones.
Liza: I'm getting there. Rebecca's new book is a Prepper book, and I don't mean books read by kids attending a 'prep school'. I mean people who prepare for disasters.
I expect you had to step out of your normal areas of expertise: werewolves and dragons--
Peep Rep: And vampires!
Liza:--and do a lot of research before letting your characters wander off into the hot Texas scruff and try to grow stuff?
Rebecca: A ton. I read on the Internet. I read books. I watched TV. I
talked to people.
Liza: I do all those things: go on the internet, read books and watch TV...occasionally leave the house and talk to live human beings, but I don't think that has helped prepare me for disasters.
Rebecca: It depends upon what you read and watched. I focused on survival information.
Liza: You talked to real live preppers? Aren't the scary?
Rebecca: No. They were nice. Truth is,
you wouldn’t know most preppers are preppers unless they tell you they are.
Liza: In general, I find all people pretty scary. They're always wanting to kill me.
Peep Rep: I understand why.
Liza: Hush Peep Rep. You aren't suppose to interrupt interviews.
So Rebecca, what type of things do Preppers hoard/store for future use?
Rebecca: Anything they might need. Canned food. Tools. Clothing. Imagine that you had to
survive like it’s the stone age. Anything they think they might need.
Liza: All I want is Internet service and my laptop.
PeepRep: Which means you'll be the first to go.
Liza: What’s the most interesting thing you discovered when
researching for this book.
Rebecca: There are very interesting ways to disable a sprinkler
system. If the FBI ever wanted to
investigate my search history I might be in trouble. There's some very odd people asking scary
questions on the Internet! Its all for research for Fiction!
Liza: Now, I'm not an FBI agent, but I did interview one, she writes Suspense thrillers...and romances, but that's another story. However, I don't recall any mention of sprinkler systems in her plots. So I'm going to go out on a limb and say while the FBI might be concerned about protecting our water supplies, I do not believe they are focusing on water sprinklers. And before I write them a scolding letter for overlooking this important component of safety, can you tell me how and why it's important?
Rebecca: Well, if you wanted to let
a place burn down that is protected by a sprinkler system you need to know how
to sabotage such a device.
Liza: Can you give us the back-story on how your heroine gathered
these people and formed the farm?
Rebecca: She had an idea, advertised, and found people who think like
her. It's more like a commune than a
farm.
Liza: It probably is. Is your heroine an ‘end of world’ believer, or more of a
‘live a better lifestyle’ person?
Rebecca: She’s a more like 'don’t worry, prepare instead' kind of a
person.
Liza: And on that Don't worry, Be Happy note, here's Rebecca's book:
Liza: Hello Love in One Night. Welcome to my blog.
Book: Are you talking to me? No one ever talks to me. They talk at me at times, but generally speaking, they treat me like an object.
Liza: Well, not today. Today you get to tell us about yourself.
Book: Well, gosh...what to say? I travel alot. I'm reliable, set in my ways...never change a word. I say the same thing today that I said yesterday.
Liza: I meant your story, tell us about Love in One Night.
Book: Of course. Sorry, never done this before.
Melanie is a woman who prepares for
disasters. If the world as she knows it were to come grinding to a
disastrous halt, her Sustainable Living Community will be ready and able to
take care of the people in their area. She doesn't have a man in her life anymore
but she has her daughter and that's enough.
Until a tall,
dark stranger drives into her life.
Griffith is on a mission to find
Melanie's ex-husband Victor, who has stolen a very expensive new drug from a
pharmaceutical company. Griffith is a man who can find what others
can't. He never backs down from a fight and he's never afraid until he
sees Melanie. She steals his breath and makes him wish for things he's
never wanted before.
They are two people who can prepare for
everything except the depths of their own need for each other.
Liza: You sound very good.
Book: I believe I am. The reviewers seem very happy with me.
Liza: Can we peek between your pages for an excerpt?
Book: *blushes* I suppose...
“I married him because I got pregnant.” She put her hands on her hips.
“And I won’t take his money because I won’t take money from the pharmaceutical
companies. No offense.”
“Gee, why would I take offense when you meant to insult me?” Melanie’s
face turned a lovely shade of cherry as he spoke.
“Truth is, I meant to say something nasty about Victor. I forgot,
momentarily, what you do and who you do it for.”
He shrugged like he words hadn’t stung a bit. The pharmaceutical
companies did both good and bad things. Griffith didn’t have to feel
one-hundred-percent comfortable all the time to still know he worked on the
right side of the law.
“Theft is theft. I give them back things they’ve lost.” He moved along
the edge of the room. Melanie must be organized. Everything had a label, down
to the box holding sponges. “And I’d bet when you get a headache, you take a
Tylenol.”
“I’d try magnesium and zinc, but your point is taken. I shouldn’t be
generalizing. I don’t like when it’s done to me.”
Griffith had to get out of there before he did anything really
asinine, like give the blushing woman a hug. He pulled out his card. “If you
hear from Victor or you think of anything, give me a call. I’ll be staying in
Austin overnight.”
“Right.” She took his card. “I’m sorry you had to come all the way
down here for nothing.”
“I’m not.” Her eyes widened, and he had a moment of sheer male
satisfaction. He’d been able to shock her.
“You haven’t asked me why I do this. Why I’m so prepared for a
disaster? You haven’t asked. Everyone does.”
“I’ve been a lot of places. I think preparing for things, even if they
might never occur, makes pretty good sense. I guess we all have our own reasons
for why we do what we do.”
She bit down on her lower lip, chewing on it as she regarded him with
narrowed eyes. “So you want to know why I married Victor but not why I formed a
whole community dedicated to organic farming in the desert, self-sustaining
living, and disaster preparedness?”
“Melanie, if you want to tell me, I’d be really amenable to hearing.”
Anything she wanted to say would be fine by him. She could read the phone book
aloud, and he’d sit like a good little boy and listen to her.
Liza: Well done book. So Peep Rep, what do you have to say now?
Peep Rep: You'll go to extraordinary lengths just to avoid editing your words. But Book did a great job discussing itself, so I want to buy it now.
Liza: Let's find out a bit more about the prolific Rebecca Royce.
REBECCA ROYCE BIO
in case you forgot what she looked like
As a teenager, Rebecca Royce would hide in her room to read her
favorite romance novels when she was supposed to be doing her homework. She
hopes, these days, that her parents think it was well worth it.
Rebecca is the mother of three adorable boys and is fortunate to be
married to her best friend. They’ve just moved to Texas where Rebecca is
discovering a new love for barbecue!
She's in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and
tries to use all of these elements in her writing. She's been told she's a
little bloodthirsty so she hopes that when you read her work you'll enjoy the
action packed ride that always ends in romance. Rebecca loves to write series
because she loves to see characters develop over time and it always makes her
happy to see her favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.
In Rebecca Royce's world anything is possible, anything can happen,
and you should suspect that it will.
