Brace for Impact @daryldevore

A Chat with Daryl Devoré

What is your greatest temptation?
In men: Matt Damon – hands down – no question.
In food: chocolate – no wait- cookies – oooh - chocolate cookies
In clothes: jeans – I'm a pretty casual person, although I love checking out $900 Prada heels.

What is your greatest weakness?
Arghh – can't come up with just one thing – have a whole list – okay – okay –cookbooks. Love cookbooks.

If you could have any kind of car, what would it be?
Lamborghini – no, a Bugatti Veyron – see you got me on a wishy-washy sort of day.

Your dream home - mountains or ocean?
Ocean. My motto – Sun. Sand. Sea water.

What inspired you to become a writer?
I learned to print. It's part of me. I eat. I breathe. I write.

Do you have a daily writing routine?  If so, please share.
Let's see. I get up. Head to my laptop. Check emails. Then chaos ensues as life kicks in. So no – no writing routine.

What is your favorite book?
That's like asking me my greatest weakness. Favourite book???? – I have bookshelves full. No idea.

What is your favorite movie?
The Bird Cage.

Who is your favorite historical figure?
Favourite historical figure???? Let's go for Joan of Arc – girl had courage.

In your books, who is your favorite hero and please introduce him?
Guess, at the moment it would have to be Guy Lapierre.
Introducing – Guy Lapierre. Say hi, Guy.

"Hi."

Who is your favorite heroine and please introduce her?
Paix
Paix is a newly divorced woman, with a fledgling career as a flight attendant. She is hiding under an assumed name to avoid the hatred of her ex. No longer a trainee, this is her first flight to try and prove herself. And everything was going great until the plane crashed.

Excerpt –
Lori gagged on the bile rising in the back of her throat. She inhaled sharply to calm her stomach. If I'm going to die, it's not going to be with vomit all over my uniform.
A distant whimper caught her ear. She lifted her head and opened her eyes. The lady in 37D rocked back and forth in her seat. Lori fought the urge to run to her. Her flight attendant training told her to stay seated. The Captain had called, "Brace for impact."
Hang on, 37D. Just a bit longer. I understand how you feel. Isolated way back here in no-man's land at the back of the plane. No one's hand to hold for comfort. Alone. Scared. Me too.
The gentleman in seat 36C stood then pulled open the overhead bin.
Lori sat up taller. "Sir! The Captain said, brace for impact. Get back in your seat. Please."
He turned his head, glancing at her. Lori blinked. She'd noticed him as she did her rounds of economy class. Sexy tousled hair. An unshaven chin. Gorgeous smile. Focus on your job. "Sir. Please. Sit. Down."
He grabbed a bag out of the bin, slammed it shut and returned to his seat.
Her heart raced as she shouted out the words she'd practiced in flight attendant school a hundred times and prayed she'd never have to use. "Head down. Brace. Brace." She hoped the sound of her voice could offer a moment's relief to the terrified passengers in economy. They were her passengers. If she could hold each of their hands, she would. "Head down. Brace. Brac—"
The plane dropped and shuddered.
Lori's professional calm shattered. The passengers under her care were going to die. She was going to die. The sensation of utter loneliness swamped her. She clenched her fists until her short nails dug into the palms of her hands. Pressure built in her ears. She tried all the tricks she knew, but the pressure wouldn't release. We're dropping too fast.
Wonder what dying is going to feel like? Will it hurt? Mom. Trembling as her mother's smiling face popped into her mind, she swallowed back a wail of grief at the thought of her mother's pain when she heard the news of the plane crash.
What's taking so long? Maybe— A ray of light shone down on the darkness of her despair. Maybe the captain was landing the plane. Captain Fraser was one of the best. He could save everyone.
The plane jerked. Metal shrieked in complaint. Fear rang loud in the screams of the passengers. Lori's pulse pounded in her chest. Her breaths came in short pants. She swiped at the sweat on her upper lip. Her stomach knotted then boiled. It was close. The end. Whatever the end was. She squeezed her eyelids shut and whispered, "Mom. I love you."

What could be simpler than a routine plane trip from Toronto, Canada to Caracas, Venezuela for a rookie flight attendant and a sexy R.C.M.P. officer?

But Fate had other intentions.

After leaving a disastrous marriage, Paix Allcot begins a new career as a flight attendant. The romance of travel plus the desperate need to be on any other continent other than the one her ex is on seems like a dream job. For the first time, Paix is no longer a trainee and the passengers in economy class are under her care. Especially the handsome passenger seated in 36C.

Guy Lapierre, undercover officer, is following a vicious human-trafficker. He has little time for relationships. Too many innocent lives are at stake. But when the plane crashes and Guy is stranded on a tropical island, he is forced to work with Paix to survive until he discovers that the man he is tracking is Paix's older brother.

Can a pink bra and a hot night on the side of a volcano save the relationship and their lives?

New releases anytime soon? One coming up in the near future – a hot contemporary – title is still to be decided.

As matters escalate from theft to murder to a most despicable crime, Xavier learns more about his father who has hated him all his life and discovers some good news. However, first, he must secure his great-grandmother and his mother, since the connection between the two ladies and Xavier has become known to several Crime Lords. As the man responsible for keeping all Crime Lords in line, the two ladies are now in danger of becoming hostages.
It’s a hard month for Vic. Due to saying too much while teaching the Scotland Yard officers on how to stop forgeries, Vic believes she has lost Xavier’s love. Excerpt
Once both Vic and the woman had their teas, Vic leaned back in her chair. “May I ask why you told Xavier your story backwards? You were very lucky he didn’t toss you out.”
The woman laughed heartedly. “He couldn’t. While he may have tried very hard to forget me, something inside him still knew who I was.”
“And how are you related to Xavier?”
“I am his great-grandmother, Vivian.”
“Ah…I see the problem. Xavier’s parents told him you died long ago.”
“Well, that explains a great deal, and it is pertinent to why I am here. His father, my grandson, is constantly taking money from my bank account. I have spoken to the bankers, and they assure me that no one is stealing from me, but every Christmas, several thousand pounds disappear from my accounts.
“Since the bankers refused to help or stop this theft, I withdrew my money and took it to a different bank, and for five years, all was good. Then the thefts began again. Once again, I complained to the banker and they treated me like a child while they assured me that all was fine.
“So, I moved my money yet again. I move my money to another bank every year now, but it is exhausting and unreasonable for me to have to do this. While I am quite certain the culprit is Xavier’s father, Daniel, I require proof, but all of the banks have treated me like I’m an old woman without the capacity to think.

Liza O’Connor was raised badly by feral cats, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. They will likely traumatize you.
You have been warned.

Leonora Harris fled her newly wedded husband’s home in Georgian England, 1725, and took shelter in a cave during a rainstorm. She woke up in a cold, barren land and a handsome stranger with a mechanical carriage offered her shelter.

Undercover American operative Rodger Ramsey never expected to find a runaway bride in the magnificent Salar de Uyuni. Assigned to Bolivia to investigate Communist activities, he just wrapped up his two-year mission in 1963 and followed his heart to the salt flats one last time.

Sparks flew and attraction sizzled. The lost, stubborn woman kicked his protective instincts into overdrive. Rodger took her home with him, determined to help her before he returned to the States, and Leonora flourished under his guidance. Their hearts intertwined. He wanted her, needed her, but could he truly love a woman who believed she jumped two hundred years in time?

Will they find a way to stay together, despite the obstacles between them, or will Leonora survive in this strange new world alone?

(Author’s Note - This is a prequel to Timeless Honor, a time travel romance with Rodger and Leonora’s granddaughter, but can be read as a standalone.)

Excerpt

“I’ll do or say whatever you wish, illegal or not.” Leonora steeled her spine as the words tore up her throat. “I thought you trusted me. What can I do to earn it?”
Rodger ate up the distance between them with three long strides and shackled her wrist in his large hand like a manacle. She stumbled toward him. Tension permeated the air around him in waves of red-hot heat.
“Have you heard of the CIA, Leonora? The Central Intelligence Agency?”
“No, I have no idea what that is.”
“What can you tell me about the communist activities and alliances in this country?”
“Nothing. I don’t know. What kind of questions are these? What are you talking about?”
His head tilted to one side and his lips thinned. Rodger stared at her with a long, hard gaze even as she squirmed, the steel in her spine gone. Stress lined his face and the tendon in his neck throbbed against his skin like a tic. Minutes passed, or maybe just seconds, and air whizzed out through his nostrils. The anger in his face seemed to drain and he somehow looked older.
“How can this be? You told me the truth about everything.” He stepped back and stroked his fingers up her arm. “Though you squirmed under my gaze, you did so after you answered me and only because I intimidated you. You didn’t once respond with a typical facial or verbal nuance to indicate you lied. I feel the truth of your words in my gut and in my soul.”
“I haven’t once lied to you.”
“I just—I don’t understand. This is so unbelievable. I wish you could provide me with some kind of undeniable proof you’re from the past.”
“As do I, Rodger.”
“If we do this, you’ll stay with me until I decide otherwise. I’ll protect you. I’ll kiss you and touch you. You should know that right away. I respect you, Leonora, but I’m not a strong enough man to deny my desire for you indefinitely. I won’t bear my frustration and keep my distance anymore. Do you understand what I mean? I need to lay with you, again and again, with no regrets. Do you accept those terms?”
Rich honey poured into his every word, every syllable, and wrapped around her like a sweet promise. Blood thundered in Leonora’s ears and her lungs expanded with air to the point they might burst. The longing in his eyes scorched her.
Caught like a fly in a spider’s web, she nodded, her voice gone.
“Tell me, dearest. I need to hear the words.”
“Yes. Yes, I accept.”
